Speed reading is a technique that allows for the absorption at a glance of several words or phrases and it can be learned by any person of any age. However, speed reading for kids should be done in different approach. The child should at least be eight to twelve years old in order for you to successfully teach speed reading. It is important that the child must be willing to allow at least fifteen minutes of his time everyday to practice new techniques. If you have already convinced your child to learn speed reading, you can get books that are appropriate for the age of your child. If your child had finished reading, make sure that you prepare something as a reward for the childs diligence. You may choose among your childs favorite toy, chocolates, cakes, clothes or anything that will make him to continue reading on the next day. Make sure that you buy something that is not that expensive for you might be obliged to give your child rewards until his ability in speed reading improves.
Set a timer to determine if your childs reading ability becomes faster. You may also invite some of your childs playmate to participate for you to make the teaching process interesting for the kids. Reading sessions should be shorter if your child is below eight years old. As your child grows older, you may increase the duration of each session. If you found that your child becomes inattentive and restless better to stop the session and continue it on the next day.

Before starting the session, it is important to explain to your child why you are trying to improve his reading ability. You may also tell them that reading using the new techniques can be more fun and rewarding. At the end of every session it is important to ask about what they have learned. You will surely be amazed on their answers and how they pick up the whole idea of the selection. Make sure that you create a fun environment while they are reading for them not to be bored on what they are doing. Learn to appreciate your childs effort to keep his interest.
More importantly, children need total encouragement to be motivated. Help them imagine what is exactly happening on the story or book that they are reading. You may ask them to share their opinion what they read and praise them for doing well. After doing all the activities and improvement exercises, do not forget to congratulate your child and ask what they want as a reward. Continue with the practice reading to achieve the average speed reading level. Once your children have already absorbed the techniques in speed reading, it will automatically be a part of their system.
